Tip of the Month

Our Handyman gives you his February Tip of the Month

DRIPPING FAUCET OR SHOWER
(It is usually the hot water that is leaking due to the heat causing the rubber washer to wear out prematurely. This will cost you increased utility bills from the heating of the water and waste of water.)

As always, SAFETY is #1. Remember your safety goggles and gloves:

#1 Turn off the water supply either at the main shut off to the house or under the Sink (At the hot and cold service valves).
#2

Remove the hot and cold knobs by removing the small plastic covers on the top of the knob.

Remove the phillips screws holding the knob on to the valve stem and pull off the knob by working back and forth pulling at the same time.

Using a wrench or socket, remove the control valve.

Looking at the end of the valve, you will see a small black washer held with a phillips screw. Remove the screw and replace the washer. Please check the seat, which will be found inside the faucet by feeling with the tip of the finger for chips or cracks. (this will cause the new washer to wear quickly). You can replace the seat by inserting a seat tool and unscrewing.

All washers, screws, seats, faucet knobs and tools can be found at your local hardware store.

#3

Reinstall your hot and cold valves.

Reinstall your hot and cold knobs.

Turn on the water supply.

Great Job!! You just saved big bucks!
